THE INLAND TRAIL: Part 3

Photo and edited by: J.unçu

VITORIA  :
Vitoria-Gasteiz has been watchhing people traveling past for Centuries.
In the heart of the Alava plains and a commercial corridor well known by the Romans: The Bordeaux-Astorga road.
A city to relax and visit with peace of mind on the trail of The Cathedrals Camino Game.

We can visit cathedrals as the new: Neo-Gothic style. (1907-1969), the so-called old: Gothic style.(1497-2017) and the One, which was the first: Romanesque style (900-1087).
-
The Cathedral of Mary Immaculate :
Most known as" the new Cathedral ".
It could be the second largest church in Spain after the Cathedral of Seville.

The statuary of the façade is unfinished, there the figures that have been carved and placed in their niches include to parents of the Church and others saints of the Church.

The central and header area.

The southern arm of the transept.

The southern façade.

 -
The Cathedral of Santa Maria :

The Bell Tower is made of ashlar masonry in its main façade,

The western portico is masterwork, where:
The  central cover is a recounts of the life of the Virgin.

While the whole cover is made as a tripartite façade: Having at left a tympanum of the life of San Gil, and at right  a tympanum showing the Last Judgement.

The Cathedral formed part of the medieval wall, it was conceived as a church-fortress, with great volume and enclosed appearance, being part of the city's defences.

Ken Follett, presented in the Portico of this Cathedral, his novel "World Without End", continuation of the well known trilogy "The  Pillars of the Earth", that will continue with " A Columm of Fire".
-

San Prudencio in Armentia:-
The apse is organized into three segments, torn by narrow windows, with half point arches and attached columns.

The south facade, houses the portico, which was the main facade of the Romanesque temple.

The left to right:
The Ascension of Christ (in the center surrounded by eleven Apostles). A victorious Knight and  The tympanum of the lamb.
Descent of Christ into hell or Anastasis and The Holy burial of Christ.

The cruise is covered with a vaulted Gothic dome, crossed  arches with anthropomorphic and winged figures of the evangelists in the bursts of the arches.

The exterior of the building is simple.

And from here to Jean Pied de Port (France). To start the French Way.

ALMOST A CATHEDRAL

GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE
The cathedral takes its name from the word cathedra, or "bishop's throne" and has a specific ecclesiastical role and administrative purpose as the seat of a bishop.
But there is not bishop here, so it can be the next.
The term basilica, when applied to a church, may be used in two ways.
In the ecclesiastical sense, a basilica is a church designated as such by the pope, and that has received certain privileges.
The reason for such a designation is often that the church is a pilgrimage site and contains the relics of a saint, or an object of religious veneration.
Also that is a building that has similarities to the basilica structures of Ancient Rome, being of longitudinal, having a central nave with an aisle on either side separated by a colonnade, and an apse or ambulatory at the end.
As Gothic has:
RIB VAULTS:

STAINED GLASS.

An all around triforium, that is a shallow arched gallery within the thickness of an inner wall, above the nave of the basilica.

The south clerestory wall with large windows with Mauméjean stained glasses.

The pointed arches that lends to a suggestion of height.

To exhibit a variety of treatment we can start by the central column of the main gate.

FLYING BUTTRESSES:
Composed of arched structures that extends from the upper portion of the walls to a pier of great mass, in order to convey to the ground the lateral forces that push a wall outwards.
Ending in some beautiful Spires and pinnacles.
THE FAÇADE:
The façade or "west front" is the most ornate part of the exterior with the processional door.
This façade  has a large top window with a flamboyant tracery , two  bottom side  rose windows or an impressive sculptural group as its central feature:
The Portal of the Redemption.

4Th Stage: Zegama  -  Agurain (Salvatierra).-  28  Novenber  2016

Now, after San Adrian, we are in the plains of Álava, a sharp contrast from the lush green valleeys of Guipizkoa.
Here, the landscape is dominated by rain-fed crops and villages resting lazily in the sun that it is hard to meet someone as one pass through.

Going down the path of Aldiko, the first thing we find is one of the oldest churches of the province from the 9th to the 12th century the hermitage of San Julián and Santa Basilissa
.

At the Baroque alterpiece at the Church of San Saturnino in Zalduondo we can see a high relief of Santiago peregrino.
The lovely walk amid the gentle outlines of the plains leads us to Ordoñana, where we can continue to trace the marks left by the Romanesque art  at the parish church.

The chapel of Sa Millan bears a distinctly Baroque Castille & Leon coat of arms on its façade.
Agurain (Salvatierra) will be our resting town, visibly the most important in the region.
An important mediaeval borough with two churches that were both fortresseand a main street that the hikers will walk along, just as the pilgrims did seven centuries bedore till we get to the albergue almost at the exist. Basic place but good accomodations.

5th Stage : Agurain (Salvatierra) - Arkaia.- 29 November  2016

Alaiza, to visit the paintings of pilgrims of the church Our Lady of the Assumption in Alaiza, one has to move about  3 kilometers (South) of the Saint James trail, and after go to Gazeo

Gazeo, a modest enclave, has somehow managed to  save some of its beautiful Gothic pictures in its Church of San Martin de Tours dated back in the 14th century.

Ezkerekotza, next, has the church of San Román, a collage of several mediaeval trends offering Romanesque (on the front), Gothic (most of the building), and a Renaissance stone altarpiece.

Although my way went around the town of Alegria the tower of its church San Blas can still be seen in the distance, because my goal was the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aiala from the 13th century and a lovely  four-arched portico on the outside.

The chapel of San Juan de Arrarain go back to the 12th century at the entrance of  Elburgo, although the village does not have any store, bar, but I was well attended at the town-hall.

On our way, up on a hillock I got to the Sanctuary of Virgen de Estibaliz, the patron of Alava with its Romanesque door 12th century and therest of the building, worth the visitor´s attention.

After, Argandoña, also associated with the historical " Roman Way " with its mediaeval Church of  Santa Columba and its lovely capitals.

Just crossing by the village of Ascarza.

Later, the village of Otazu, that appears in the Codex of San Millán of the year 1025, with the St. Martin's Church, the , which entrance dates back to the 13th century, and it is of Romanesque style.

Detail of the facade of the Church.
And as the inn (mesón) was closed I carry on between fields of sugar beet.

To finish the trip of this day arriving to Arkaia´s Roman bathhouse to be able to take one of the most common daily activitie for the pilgrim and in the Roman culture "the Termas", a bath.

And being well welcomed at "Leku" or  albergue, to whom I want to thank affectionately their welcoming.
